i saw this pumpkin
it reminded me of halloween. i don't know why halloween is celebrated. no one really knows. no one cares either, as long as they can buy things. everything is orange and scary. in the future halloween will be a celebration of the orange people. you know, the ones with almost-pumpkin-coloured faces. fake bake will sponsor it. scary!

i saw this photo of poverty (a blog action day special)
today is blog action day and the theme is poverty. i'm not going to lecture you about poverty because, in my opinion, people either care or they don't. instead, i'm going to share with a photo that has had a big impact on me. i hope that it makes you think too.
this pulitzer prize winning photo is one of the most shocking photos i have ever seen.
the picture was taken during the 1994 sudan famine and shows a starving child crawling towards a united nations food camp, located a kilometre away. the vulture is waiting for the child to die so that it can eat him. no one knows what happened to the child, including the photographer kevin carter who left the place as soon as the photo was taken. three months later carter committed suicide. (information from worldfamousphotos.com)
that is all. now think, people, think.

i saw this famine statue
it's a sad statue. but look at the sky. the sky's so happy! the sky's so blue! i've never seen the sky so calm!

i saw this mohican
on an anarchist once. (power to the people!)
the clonycavan man had a mohican. mohicans are high maintenance. it takes at least half an hour of backcombing, twisting, gelling and spraying. some people use toothpaste, shoe polish, glue or egg whites. why would you do that to yourself? it's a bit like a perm. or a mullet. not to mention the mo-hullet. not cool.

i saw this graffiti
i don't think it's art. or is it? maybe what makes it art is the fact that it's not art? people think it's vandalism, but, actually, it's just cool art that only cool people get? the correct singular of graffiti is graffito. but only really cool people know that.

i saw this fax machine
for sale at the bernard shaw carboot sale once. faxing is fun. you scribble something on a piece of paper, put it in a fax machine and send it to the other side of the world. much nicer than emails, when you think about it. i can't wait until faxing is so old fashioned that it's cool.

i saw this shooting gallery
in temple bar, on east essex street. it is where junkies shoot up. people can watch them through the small windows. sometimes a junkie overdoses and dies and an ambulance arrives and the people watching say 'oh my god' and shake their heads. then they go to starbucks.
junkies are scary. they mug people when they need money. i'm scared that one day they will need my money. but it's no one else's problem, really, i can just take a taxi.

i saw this cow
at a farmers' market once. mooooooo. farting cows cause more than a third of ireland's greenhouse gas emissions. the easiest way to save the environment, therefore, is getting rid of cows.

i saw this orange bike
in temple bar the other weekend. why would you paint your bike orange? orange is such a strange colour. it reminds me of easyjet. it's a cheap colour.
in dublin, it is fashionable for girls to paint their bodies orange. often streaky orange. i like to think of them as a new race: the orange people.

i saw this jesus
outside a church in portobello. it made me wonder, why does jesus always look so miserable? like he's really really sad. why? i don't think i've ever seen him smile in my whole life. depressing.

i saw these sun loungers
at the urban beach on sunday. i wonder who the genius was who decided that this would be a good way to spend public money. i think the whole thing is depressing. everyone knows the weather is shocking, there's no need to rub it in. and if the weather actually was good, why would anyone choose to go to a sandpit in ifsc when there are plenty of beaches in dublin?

I saw all these cool things
at the toejam carboot sale at the bernard shaw last weekend. i thought it was the coolest ever carboot sale. i liked the graffiti on the walls too.
i saw lots of cool shoes. and a mickey mouse bag.
and lots of funky people. i like taking pictures of people with their heads missing at the moment. i think it makes the pictures more interesting. it's probably completely wrong and bad photography, but i like it. it leaves more room for imagination.

i saw this swedish guy
for hire at the toejam carboot sale last weekend. i took several pictures of him. for some reason i like this one best, eventhough his face is cut off. i saw lots of interesting stuff at the carboot sale. lots of super-cool people and colourful stuff. definitely the funnest and coolest thing i've seen happen in dublin on a saturday afternoon. most of my pictures didn't turn out that great, unfortunately. i might post one or two more later.

i saw this derelict cinema
in rathmines the other day. i wish i'd taken the photo from another angle to avoid the lamp post. but i quite like it as it is. i googled stella and found some interesting information. it was opened in 1923. the boomtown rats played there in the seventies. so did elvis costello. by the time the cinema closed in 2004, it had become very run down. the seats were hard and dirty. the toilets were unusable. there were cobwebs everywhere. the curtains were black with dirt. the floor was sticky. there is a rumour that someone once was bitten by a rat there. the place was so bad that it became cool. i wish they'd re-open.

i saw this accordion player
in temple bar yesterday. it was a cold and rainy day. people walked past in a hurry. everyone looked miserable. he's been playing his accordion in the same spot for many years. he wishes he was on a small greek island. he could play in his old friend's tavern. people would sing and dance. he would be known across the island as a great accordionist. his music would make people happy. he would be happy. everyone would know his name. his fingers would never get cold...
when i turned around, i saw this woman across the street. she is the accordionist's wife. they got married in his old friend's tavern a long time ago. she, too, wishes she was back on the sunny island. she could work at her brother's restaurant. most customers would want to eat outside in the sun. some would prefer the shade, especially at lunch time. she would laugh and joke with the customers. everyone would be smiling. she would be happy. everyone would know her name. she would never be cold...
